Although these feelings re-surface numerous times in the novel, never do they as strongly as at Pon’s ball where Andrea leaves on account of her cheap and dirty shoes and the feeling of estrangement she gets from being surrounding by a bourgeois social class. When Andrea flees Romà ¡n’s room, it is Ena’s phone call which saves her from her fear and insomnia, and then again at the end of the book it is Ena’s letter which allows her to escape from the ‘chillidos histà ©ricos’[6] of the house on Airbau. So even if by the end of the novel, Andrea’s fortunes seem to have changed and she appears to have surpassed the rigid social boundary that she felt trapped by earlier in the novel, it is not of her own doing and, like a child still, she was helped out of her miserable situation by someone who is able to assume the identity of a mature young woman. The idea of fragmentation of the self is reinforced by looking at the way Andrea takes features of others, mostly Ena but also Romà ¡n to a degree, and sees in them characteristics she herself would like to have. Ena is a projection of the identity that Andrea lacks, she embodies the courage, attractiveness and sensuality that the protagonist wishes she was capable of having. Similarly, Romà ¡n, although flawed, represents the cultured, sophisticated personality that Andrea desires for herself. The narrator, by raising these other characters into semi-divinity and openly presenting them as her dream self, she emphasizes her own lack of identity and reveals yet another layer of fragmentation. This is partly due to the repression of desires and natural identity she finds in the house on Aribau, as well as the complete split between the disjointed, violent life led by a family broken by the effects of the Civil War and the liberal stability of the new high-bourgeois family idealized by Franco. Most homes have at least two indoor faucets. Almost every public building has water fountains conveniently placed for easy, instant refreshment. Water is simple; it’s always there. Yet despite all this convenience, simplicity, and lack of excitement, water is the most essential part of life. In the meantime, Ethiopia has been denied use of its very own river (Thurow A1). Thanks to irrigation systems that have been in place since ancient times, Egyptian farmers grow rich crops in the middle of the dessert while Ethiopians starve to death. But perhaps this could all change. The World Bank, the United States, and other countries traditionally donating food to Ethiopia now realize that Ethiopia should begin sustaining itself. With a half a billion dollars coming from the US alone each year, only because food aid has become outrageously expensive is Ethiopia being granted the permission to use its own natural resources to sustain itself (Thurow A1). The attempt to substitute foreign aid for self-reliance is reminiscent of the old proverb about teaching a man to fish. Sadly, there is yet another complication to the crisis in Northern Africa. The Nile carries more than water. The water running through Ethiopia in the Nile carries nutrients and rich soil with it. The mixture that makes its way into Egypt is natures own perfect blend for agriculture. Egypt’s desert sand alone could never grow the rich crops found along the Nile. Without taking care of the land and soil in Ethiopia by properly cultivating it, the natural fertility of the Nile will diminish. Depression and its causes free essay sample

The area of mental health is a very unique field. It is so unique because it leaves room for questioning at every turn, for example when a diagnosis is made who is to say that the one deciding the illness is correct on deeming another’s state of mind. What that basically means is a whole medical field is based on someone’s dictation of the meanings of sane and insane and a healthy mind to an unhealthy one. Now that is not said to discredit the relevance of mental hospitals and doctors specializing in it, they are necessary and crucial to have. The consistency of mental health was the aspect being questioned. The mental illness of depression however is one of the generally less disputed against diagnoses’. There are clear causes and even clearer symptoms shown by someone who is considered to be depressed. Depression affects people mentally and physically and the main thing expressed by somebody with clinical depression is lack of interest in anything they might have usually liked to do and radical changes in behavior along with irregular sleeping patterns (Nordqvist, 2-3). All these visual things are what make depression much easier to diagnose than most other mental illnesses. Depression, no matter what specific type, is a very curable mental illness that is also a relatively common illness in comparison to most others. Symptoms of depression do differ between types, and amongst the six types that exist they all share the main symptoms of fatigue, lack of interest, thrown off appetite, and messed up sleeping patterns as the four most common (Depression, 2-3). Depression in all forms is linked to other mental illnesses like Bipolar disorder, Schizophrenia, and Autism due to similarities in each illness’s genetic make-ups (Nordqvist, 1). Based upon this the symptoms of having depression may not even be limited to the ones listed for actual depression, it could go far enough as whatever symptoms are for any of those other three illness’s as well. Now in relation to treatment for Depression the conversation is very open because it is one of the more treatable disorders. The sooner someone starts their depression treatment the faster they can recover, the depression can still be fully treated if it is not helped right away, but it will take longer. The main two treatments for depression are through drugs and psychotherapy. The drugs are anti depressants and psychotherapy is a method of psychological therapy where doctors use a psychological approach on the patients rather than physical means (Nordqvist, 5-6). It helps keep the patients calm and less stressed when the fear or intimidation of physical psychiatric machines and treatments are removed from their thoughts of treatment. The causes of depression are mostly seen not just mentally on patients but also physically. Studies show that people with depression have high risks of developing obesity, or on the opposite side, uncommon loss weight loss proving the pertinence of physical effects that depression can cause. It also increases risks of cardiovascular disease and diabetes in people. However the causes differ from the effects (obviously) because these health issues develop as result of depression but there are connections of the effects to the causes (Nordqvist, 5). Being adept to the effects can jump-start other causes for people. Depression causes, as previously stated, fatigue, loss in interest, changed appetite and abnormal sleep, but also has had cases where loss of sexual desire, lack of attention, constant feelings of anxiety, pessimism, hopelessness, and restlessness with irritability occur (Depression, 2-3). All of these are key signs to tell if a person has depression, if one or two of these issues are present there is no need for alarm, especially if they only last for a few hours infrequently. However if around 4-7 of these symptoms are shown and they are reoccurring or even all the time then there is a large chance that the person is depressed. Depression really affects people who have it physical and emotionally and it has just as much of an effect on their loved ones too. It slows down everyone’s life around them and denial or negligence toward what is really occurring is very common when a family member or someone you generally see every day starts to suffer from depression (Depression, 9). The good side is how curable and how continually researched the field of depression treatment and understanding it is and how much progression has already came and how much is sure to come in the future. An illness with the severity, along with the commonness of depression is rare to come across. In the US 6. 7% of adults are diagnosed with depression annually and that’s not including all the cases where people assume nothing is wrong and don’t go to see a doctor, which happens with a lot of people (Depression, 3). If you come across someone you feel could be depressed it is your duty to try and motivate that person to go to the doctors and to make sure they attempt to get better because sometimes it is the people that the victims are living with that are holding them back from seeing doctors. Just as bad as the people diagnosed with depression don’t want to face the facts sometimes, neither do the people closest to them. Depression can lead to death in some cases where its victims get thoughts of suicide and even get the means to act on them. Depending on how sever ones case is can effect if they get these thoughts or not but regardless it could happen to any depression victim so symptoms must be caught in time to stop the thoughts from advancing into action. The causes of depression rely on environment, genetic makeup, and ones ability to relate to people or lack of ability to. And the symptoms of depression, as explained before, are lack of interest, fatigue, as well as appetite and sleep changes so the causes as well as symptoms have impactful physical changes on people and obviously mental ones as well (Depression, 2). There is always hope to be cured once diagnosed with depression but there has to be effort from the victim and the ones close, it is really hard to live with somebody who is depressed, and all people can do it give support.

William Shakespeare The history of William Shakespeare, poet and playwright, is anything but one free of controversy. There are several arguments challenging his very existence. Over the years, every aspect of his life has been studied and researched comprehensively. One of the most intriguing aspects of his life undoubtedly is his relationship with his wife and his various love affairs. This essay aims to highlight and analyze the environment surrounding his marriage and attempt to compare it with information presented in the screenplay. The various scholars who have involved themselves in bringing to life his past have come up with stirring evidence about his marriage. What is for certain is the fact that Shakespeare did marry a certain Anne Hathaway. "On November 28, 1582 the Bishop of Worcester issued the marriage bond for 'William Shagspere' and 'Ann Hathwey of Stratford' This was almost beyond doubt, Anne Hathaway, daughter of Richard Hathaway of Shottery" (1582 Marriage). This quote not only confirms this fact, but also gives us the most accurate known date of Shakespeare's wedding. However, some records have changed the whole story surrounding Shakespeare's marriage. Ivor Brown, in his book Shakespeare, traces the circumstances that led up to the marriage. William Shakespeare may not have married Anne Hathaway out of choice. "On November 27, 1582, an entry was made in the Episcopal register at Worcester. This set down the issue of a marriage license to William Shakespeare and Anne Whatley of Temple Grafton. On the next day, two yeomen of Stratford, Fulk Sandells and John Richardson, agreed to pay forty pounds should any legal consideration arise to prevent the marriage of William Shagspere and Anne Hathway of Worcester." (Brown 45) The first theory that can be proposed after reading the excerpt is that an error occurred in the recording of the wedding and was promptly taken care of the next day. But, what if Anne Whatley really did exist? After all, the excerpt does claim that the two Annes were from different towns. It isn't hard to tribute an affair to Shakespeare at all. Shakespeare didn't need looks to captivate a lady's heart. Over the years, he has captured the hearts of millions worldwide with his penmanship. Arguably, such a man could, at that young an age, have easily seduced several women with the magic of his words. And, even though he is some ten years older in the screenplay, Norman and Stoppard have done a brilliant job of portraying Will as an individual brimming with passion and lust in the screenplay. Though a mix up in names was commonplace of that time, it is unlikely that it took place in this instance. Hathaway and Whatley are wholly different names and Temple Grafton could certainly not have been penned down as Stratford. "Now however sleepy a clerk may have become during the course of his day's penmanship and its refreshment intervals, it is extremely unlikely that he would transliterate Temple Grafton into Stratford" (Brown 48). This bit of evidence may be the clue that suggests the possibility of Anne Whatley's existence. Had there been an Anne Whatley from Temple Grafton and an Anne Hathaway, from Stratford, it would give a juicy twist to the story of William Shakespeare, the lover! But, we can only speculate as to what the truth actually was. Perhaps, Shakespeare had intended to marry Whatley all the way and an irresistible Hathaway had suddenly walked into his life. Another possibility could be that the playwright was having an affair with both women at the same time and had made false promises to both. And, the reason he ended up marrying Hathaway was that she was three months pregnant. " . . . because the bride was some three months pregnant and there was reason for haste in concluding the marriage" (1582 Marriage). This corresponds with what Will tells Dr. Moth in the screenplay. So, we arrive at the conclusion that Shakespeare did not marry Anne Hathaway by choice. This would obviously imply that the relationship would not be a happy one and would in fact be short-lived. Hence, we return to Will's statement in the screenplay about the detached relationship between him and his wife. "WILL: Four years and a hundred miles away in Stratford. A cold bed too, since the twins were born. Banishment was a blessing" (12). This statement not only describes the emptiness between the couple, but also runs parallel with the possibility that Will indeed never wanted Hathaway as his wife. Another strong pillar supporting this theory is a statement from Shakespeare's will.

For instance the islands in the middle of the road, they are there to make crossing City Road safer and more convenient to those who travel by foot. The island isn’t just the concrete mound in the middle of the road, it also includes the paint on the ground around it which cars are not allowed to drive over. Again, the bollards that were erected along the pavements are there to favour pedestrians. The reason why they were put there is to stop vehicles parking on the curbs, which was a problem before the bollards were put in place as the cars and lorries would park right over the pavements making it difficult for people to walk past and leaving less space for people with prams or wheelchairs to go round. Some things favour different groups because they appeal to different groups. Take for example the Taste Buds Cafe; one thing that struck me straight away was that the majority of the customers in there were predominantly female and mostly the older generation. They like to go in there because it appeals to them, it appeals to them because; The price is reasonable- a lot of the customers will be drawing a pension so keeping costs down is important to them, They feel safe- because there are regulars who go there and they get familiar with one another and that gives the customers a sense of safety because they know what to expect and Mr Suarez the cafe owner aids in the feeling of safety through being consistent in the way in which he runs his business. Also the menu is all home cooked and this is important to his customers. Because of all these factors, Mr Suarez’s cafe is geared more towards the older generation than the younger ones so in a sense it is favouring, although that isn’t altogether a bad thing. Lastly I would mention the security cameras. They are positioned all over City Road and they are there for a number of reasons, one reason is that a crime is less likely to be committed in an area which has CCTV (which deters people from offending) and also it makes people in the area feel safer knowing that these things are in place to not only aid in the catching of the people who commit the crimes but also that it is part of crime prevention too. CCTV is important on City Road because it does make the residence feel that little bit safer, a lot of them feel that the road is a bit â€Å"rough† and not the sort of place you would like to walk down at night, even though the local policeman denies that there is a problem with crime in the area. Diversity in Video and Computer Games Ever since the Pong and Atari 2600 consoles became commonplace items in the American household in the 1980s, video games have been part of the world culture. One may be challenged to find a college dorm room without at least one (if not all three) â€Å"next generation† video game systems. Yes, video games are common methods of entertainment among college students regardless of race. So it seems logical that, since the games are played by all races, they should have content featuring all races, right? Well, that’s what I’m here to examine. Violence and Gaming Up to this point, the majority of research based on video games was directed toward the two major concepts of gender and violence. The existence of violence in games is not up for debate; from Donkey Kong throwing barrels and Pac-Man eating ghosts during the birth of home gaming, to samurai Samanosuke slicing up demons in Playstation 2’s Onimusha series, violence has been prevalent in gaming. In fact, a study claims that, on average, 89% of video games include violent content (Children Now, 2001).The question is: how does the violence affect young players? There are two rival camps with opposing viewpoints on the matter of media violence. One, and arguably the more vocal of the two, states that violent content is likely to make the viewer/player act out in violent ways. The other claims that violence in games acts as a catharsis, thus preventing violence on the part of the user. Research on this aspect of video games, and in fact all media, has been conducted as long as the technology has been in existence (Dominick, J.R. (1984). The foundation of human development, responds to the breakdown of its commitment to the development of attitudes and skills, which facilitate authentic personal, spiritual, and social development and the transformation throughout an individual’s life span. During an individual’s life span, the foundations of human development begin to change, as the direct result of the social environment. Contact within the social environment, such as various relationships with others, causes growth and change in human development.The understanding of culture and the importance of cultural competency are major factors in the development of humans in a social environment. Various aspects of development are combined together to make up an individual’s growth and development. The basics of human development in the social environment must focus on the dynamic interactions among biological, psychological, and social aspects of development. The understanding of human development requi res the comprehension of the various ranges of issues, people are facing as they continue progressing in life.This understanding includes the entire life span of an individual. The life span includes infancy, childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Each individual may face different situations in each of the different groups of the life span, which could cause alternative responses depending on physical appearance, knowledge base, or even socializing. The focus of understanding of human development in the social environment includes these three theories, biological development, psychological development, and social development.These signs of development together can be referred to as bio-psycho-social development. Biological development includes the physical aspects of the individual’s personal life. Psychological development is the individuals functioning and cognitive processes. The social development brings out the individuals interaction with others around them. In this er a, diversity and cultural competence are extremely important to understand, regarding the foundations of human development in the social environment. Diversity can alter or affect an individual’s behavior in many ways.Diversity is considered when an individual is different, or composed of differing elements. Therefore, diversity can include different nationality, gender, sexual orientation, age, class, disability, gender identity, immigration status, political ideology, and religion. At any time, an individual is determined as belonging to another group, different from the majority, the individual is considered to be subject to the effects of diversity. Many children coming from different countries have a problem with language.Not being able to speak the language of the community can cause huge barriers for the children to overcome. Many parents believe that the key to a successful life and fulfillment is to get an education. These parents encourage their kids, that with an e ducation nothing can defeat you. It is also very important for the social worker, or human service provider to be comfortable with diversity, and is culturally competent. Cross-cultured means the individual appreciates and compares the differences and the similarities of different cultures as well as their own.The general systems theory based on order, explains why the scenario is what it is. The study of social systems perspective gives the identified assumption that there is an underlying intelligible general order in the world to which all matter relates. Therefore, social order is a subset of general systems, and works together to form the theory of order. General systems theory has become more than just a theory; it has become a way of life, and a part of how we communicate.This system begins by using a reduction method, breaking down the individual by parts, which is what we may call simplification. This idea ensures each part of the whole is more manageable, and understandabl e. How did the church’s way of presenting the good news about Jesus to a wide audience change and not change between Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages? Proposed Answer: The time beginning in the 2nd and 8th centuries, A.D., is historically tagged as the Late Antiquity.   Early Middle Ages were between the 5th and 10th centuries.   These were also known as the Dark Ages.   It was a time during which in Europe, specifically the Roman Empire, was faltering.   There were peculiar happenings dealing with Roman Emperor Constantine.   He was having dreams of placing crosses on war shields; he was in constant fear of losing his status; Rome, â€Å"The Ruler† of Europe for so many decades was now losing it’s footing in power struggles with outside entities. Rome was also becoming the center of the Catholic religion’s domain; that power was attached to every single life event that took place and, as Christ bleeds upon the crucifixion cross, this influence bled out to every part of Roman government in existence up until the Middle Ages.   Therefore, Constantine deeply down realized he was but little matter; the prophets and disciples, the Kings of the Old and New Testaments were the true icons of ruling forces. Thus, this writer contends that earlier religious teachings were of mediocre and standard quality and delivery; it was tentative; perhaps there is One God; perhaps there are many gods.   It was still, basically, unclear in the minds of men. In 311, Emperor Galerius implemented the first of many to come edicts, tolerating Christian life in the Roman Empire, their teachings, and their practices, and this is when these teachings, now actually legal, turned from simple Bible doctrines and hearsay conversations written down in the Holy Bible to actual law; they were now free to inundate the world with doctrinal influence. There was a sort of â€Å"reverse intolerance† now in the hands of Christians; their profound and inexorable belief was this:   There is only one path, and one path only to the Godly life; through his Son, Jesus Christ.   No exceptions; half measures would avail nothing, according to the Holy Bible, the disciples, apostles, prophets, and followers.     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Church leaders were becoming more prominent.   What loftier church leader than the head of the Roman Catholic Church?   And thus, the bleeding began, the fluid, fast-moving interface, from Jesus to justice.   And once it took hold in a legal way in Rome, the greatest empire in the world thus far, it only gained strength as time marched on.   This came in the form of, the Milan Edict.   The meat of this is as follows: ..it has pleased us to remove all conditions whatsoever, which were in the prescripts formerly given to you officially, concerning the Christians and now any one of these who wishes to observe Christian religion may do so freely and openly, without molestation. ..that you may know that we have given to those Christians free and unrestricted opportunity of religious worship. ..we have also conceded to other religions the right of open and free observance of their worship for the sake of the peace of our times, that each one may have the free opportunity to worship as he pleases ; this regulation is made we that we may not seem to detract from any dignity or any religion. In 316, â€Å"religious persecution† became the good cause of the 3rd century, creating an exact opposite transition intended, it seems, from touting the unconditional compassion of Jesus Christ, Son of God, to wielding a cross-decorated-pennon attached to a saber and sinking it into the chest of the pagan, just because he is a nonbeliever. Christianity at first was a new concept of thought, perhaps, the first existential thinking in the world as we know it.   The barbarically ridiculous outcome of this came in the form of further edicts and mandates; now, this being c. 325, any critical thinking and religious choice at all were forbidden in the new Christian Empire. So doctrines, teachings, laws, and educational mandates were precisely aligned with this new empire’s beliefs.   There was no other way of thinking, behaving, acting, living; it was predestined and you were to follow the order, or else. This included the theory, which necessitated a formal conference in the city of   Nicea, including a gathering of 318 prominent religious leaders attendance. The council issued a major creedal statement that affirmed that the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit were consubstantial.   This meant that the Holy Trinity (God being One but composed of The Father, The Son, and The Holy Ghost/Spirit) was a tri-composed entity; separate but in union.   This theory was argued over centuries in time.   It still is. This meant that speech, writing, and assembly rights regarding religious issues were under a microscope of some bureaucrat, priest, or both. Over the coming centuries, pagans were ruthlessly attacked and oppressed by the alliance of government and religion, with their beliefs being progressively outlawed and their temples continually demolished, confiscated, and plunder This could not help but be reflected in the educational forums, and strict Old Testament and new Testament preachings ruled classrooms and formal gatherings, whether they be political or not. Exodus 34:11-15:   â€Å"Observe†¦I drive out before thee the Amorite†¦Canaanite†¦Hittite†¦Perizzite†¦Hivite†¦Jebusite.   Take heed to thyself, lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land whither though goest†¦But ye shall destroy their alters, break their images, and cut down their groves; For though shalt worship no other god; for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.† Summarizing, this writer can only research and take in just so much historical literature and archives of information, both from internet files and hard copy books.   There must be an innate sense of justice and injustice where religious doctrines are concerned.   There were, it appears, more strict religious requirements of the people living in the Roman Empire as time went on. Whether the Emperor, Constantine, who was, journaletically weak, ineffectual, and acting in a fear-based manner, did succumb to popular demand, without a devout belief in Christianity as texted in the Holy Bible, or not, how could he truly rule effectively? Perhaps the answer of how the teachings of Christianity differed from the span of times stipulated here, Late Antiquity, through to Early Middle Ages could be synopsized as such . . . Any dictatorship political organization will always be questioned as being part of the machinations of unbalanced rule.  Ã‚   The appeal from Jesus Christ, who lived on our earth from the year 1 A.D. through to 33 A.D., dying on the cross by Roman soldiers who were either willing or unwilling.   We do not have personal interview documentation. As time, to repeat, marches on, these theories that are unusual, antiestablishment, unique are considered, and reconsidered.   With time, they become more potent in theoretical meaning.   An â€Å"outbreak† of â€Å"let’s try something new† comes upon the few followers.   Their foundation is a text (the Holy Bible) and true believers (disciples, prophets, followers).   The spread of word is their newly chosen vocation.   They are innocently providing others with the â€Å"true way of life† which in this case, is a new life through Jesus Christ our Lord To teach this is admirable; to insist on this is tyrannical.   It is this writer’s desire that we, as human beings, choose to live, and let live, in the truest sense of the word.
